Native Sun

You Should Listen to Nappy Head by Clint Breeze

Last November while working my regular Monday night gig in Indianapolis at The Chatterbox Jazz Club, a fellow musician and producer Clint Breeze approached me about doing some session work on his upcoming album Nappy Head. He had the album pretty much done but was in need of some keyboard and synthesizer parts for his title track. The deadline for the recording process was quickly approaching and he was in a bind.

My Native Sun bandmate Sleepy suggested I play the keyboard parts for the song. I was hesitant because I don't consider myself a "real" keyboardist but I've done similar work on my own production. After thinking over it during the course of my gig that night I decided to go ahead and give it a try. I'm glad I made that decision because the entire album turned out to be very dope and I'm very proud to have a small role in the creation of it.

Nappy Head is an excellent representation of Indianapolis hip hop. Clint Breeze did an incredible job of creating a project that is socially relevant, has incredible production and a lineup of brilliant emcees. You can even find Native Sun frontman, B Young featured on the song Lucky (track 18). Please take some time and give this music a listen. If you love hip hop you'll be glad you did. The Art of Hip Hop Live Performance with Native Sun

Here's a performance video I made last fall when Native Sun in performed in Cincinnati for the city's Walnut Hills Street Festival. Take a look and let me know what you think. We're also planning shows for spring and summer so if there's a place in your city you would like to us perform please let me know!

Watch Native Sun on FanJamTV

There is an exciting new web video series based in New York called FanJamTV. The show brings musical artists and their listeners together by providing a platform for face-to-face interaction via Skype. It's very unique because it allows music lovers to directly interview the artists they support.

Native Sun was recently invited to be a guest on the show and it was a great experience. We were able to finally meet some of the people who support us in various cities around the US. Those who participated asked us some very thoughtful and important questions. It was very encouraging to see how many people are genuinely interested in our work.

Please check out the video below and see what I mean for yourself. I'd love to know what you think about this show!

Universoul Grind Entertainment to Feature Native Sun

Universoul Grind Entertainment is an organization based in Tampa, Florida that produces and curates content for people want to connect with inspiring independent hip hop artists. A few weeks ago I was contacted by UGE’s Caleb and Artisha Williams for an interview with Native Sun. The interview, which will be available for listening on Thursday, January 28th is going to be something you don’t want to miss. We talked in depth about our creative process, inspiration and some unusual facts about each member of the group.

The process of interviewing with UGE lead me to check out some of the other content on their website and I was thoroughly impressed. There’s a wealth of amazing videos, music and interviews from brilliant artists representing hip hop, spoken word and soul music. UGE is definitely the site to connect with to discover some of the great art currently being created by independent musicians all over the country. Click below to check out a video they recently posted of a Jam Master Jay Tribute featuring TJ Mizell x DJ Scratch.

Native Sun Brings our Brand of Live Hip Hop to Chicago

Check out this video recap from a previous show with Native Sun. We opened for Chicago emcee Rising Over Envy (R.O.E.) at At North Bar. The energy in the room and audience was amazing. Chicago is absolutely one of my favorite places to play and we always get love whenever we go there. If you're unfamiliar with him be sure to check out his current EP To Happiness, it's really dope.

Also please let me know what venues in your city are your favorites. I'd love to come there and do a show with Native Sun in the near future! So hit me up in the comments!

Native Sun Represents for Indianapolis Hip Hop on Dencity Radio

I recently had the honor of doing a radio interview along with my Native Sun brothers Bobby Young and Sleepy. We made an appearance on a really great hip hop radio show and podcast called Dencity Radio out of Boston, Massachusetts. This was the perfect opportunity to talk about our upcoming live EP for the first time publicly and we were also able to show some love to our local Indianapolis hip hop scene, which is beginning to flourish.

The show's host, Michelle La Poetica is doing an incredible job of building a platform for good, independent hip hop music. She is also a part of a hip hop collective in Massachusetts called Wreck Shop Movement. We'll be building and collaborating with them more in the coming months. Take a listen to Native Sun's interview on Dencity Radio below!

Chreece Hip Hop Festival to Feature Native Sun

This coming Saturday my band Native Sun has the honor of being involved in an exciting new hip hop festival in Indianapolis called Chreece (Cheers and Peace, get it!). Organized by Indianapolis rapper Oreo Jones, this is the first festival of it’s kind in the city. We’re looking forward to coming together with over 40 artists for an all day celebration of Indiana hip-hop culture. Since moving to Indianapolis in 2004, I’ve been able to meet and work with some very brilliant artists in the local scene. This festival is something I believe is long overdue for our city.

Native Sun is performing a set for the festival and also backing several of Indiana’s best emcees. It’s going to be a great event. I’ll be sharing video, mp3’s, photos and anything else I can capture. In the meantime please check out the Chreece website. This is something I believe will grow into one of the country’s major festivals in the years to come. Be one of the first to know about it.

Also shout out to Oreo Jones for inviting Native Sun to perform!
