I found this video from Karceno4life that talks about how hip hop went from being a positive black cultural phenomenon to a tool that aids in mass incarceration of black people in the US. Personally I think with the rise of the internet and direct marketing, artists are now in the best position to reclaim hip hop for it's original purpose. This video describes some important history that shows us where we are currently and where we need to go.
A couple of days ago someone asked me if Native Sun has a record deal or is looking to sign one. My response was an emphatic no. To me a record deal is just a fancy way of going into debt. I have plenty of that already from just getting a degree and having kids. At this stage in life my focus is on building something that I own and can pass on to my children.
Shortly after that conversation I came across this video from one of my favorite YouTube channels, Karceno4Life. Coincidentally it breaks down all the reasons why I wouldn't sign a record deal and why there so many talented people in hip hop who go broke. Check it out and let me know what you think.
